Plans Examination Process

Check to see if your project is in SCCFD’s jurisdiction.

Properties located in the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County need to be submitted to 70 W. Hedding, 7th Floor San Jose, CA. Call (408) 299-5760 for more information on process.

Find and complete application

Submittal Turn Around Time:

  • Original submittals will be turned around in ten business days or fewer.
  • Afternoon submittals will be date stamped for the following business day.
  • No fees for resubmittals, revisions, or as-builts.
  • Resubmittals, revisions, and as-builts will be turned around in five business days or fewer.

All submittals will be given a Fire Prevention plan check number for reference.
To schedule an inspection, call (408) 378-4010 and ask to speak to Fire Prevention.

Fire Protection System Submittals

Deferred submittals are accepted Monday – Friday 8:00 am– 5:00 pm Santa Clara County Fire Department is located at 16795 Lark Ave, Suite 200, Los Gatos, CA. The applicant must be a C-10 or C-28 state certified company. ­­A wet stamp of the applicant must be on the plans.

NOTE:

  • We will not accept fire protection system applications if the Fire Department does not have architectural plans for the project.
  • We will not accept fire protection system applications if a building permit has not been issued.

Exceptions to this are for voluntary systems and modified systems.

First submittal will be reviewed within ten business days.

Revised, resubmittal, as-builts plans will be reviewed within five business days.

Once plans have been reviewed, a staff member will call the number provided on the application to inform the applicant that plans are ready to be picked up.

Plans will be available in will-call at 16795 Lark Ave, Suite 200, Los Gatos, CA. 

Fireworks

Firework applications can only be accepted from a licensed pyro technician. This may also include companies acting on behalf of a licensed pyro technician.

To apply for an event that includes pyrotechnics

A fire department representative must be on site during the show. (Overtime fees may apply.)

Hazardous Material Plan Submittals

Hazardous Material plan submittals for the incorporated areas of Campbell, Cupertino and Los Gatos will be processed in our Fire Prevention Division located at 16795 Lark Ave, Suite 200, Los Gatos, CA

Fees are due upon submittal. There will be an approximate processing time of ten business days for new submittals and five business days for resubmittals.

Please call our Fire Prevention Division to speak with a HazMat Specialist for further details on hazardous material plan submittals and the corresponding processing fee at (408) 378-4010.

Model Rocket

A model rocket is any toy or educational device that is propelled by an engine and does not weigh more than 500 grams, including the engine and any payload.

To submit for a model rocket permit, fill out the model rocket application.

Over the Counter Submittals

Over the counter submittals will only be accepted for commercial fire sprinkler projects with 15 heads or less and with no new branches. 

Bring application, payment, and three sets of plans in to Santa Clara County Fire Department located at 16795 Lark Ave, Suite 200, Los Gatos, CA.

Over the counter submittals are accepted Monday – Friday 8:00 am-12:00 pm & 1:00 pm -5:00 pm.

It is not guaranteed that there will be a Plans Examiner on site so it is suggested that you call ahead at (408) 378-4010.

Overtime Expedite

Permittee information must be completed.

  • Download the form to your computer, complete the fillable areas.
  • Save the document to your computer.
  • Attach the document to an email.

The Fire Prevention Division will contact you within two business days of receiving this request.  Not all requests are granted.  If granted, we will notify you of the plan review status (approved/not approved) upon completion. Permits and/or comments will not be given until expedited plan check fees have been paid in full.

Fees will vary. (One hour minimum.)

Overtime Inspection

Permittee information must be completed.

The Fire Prevention Division will contact you within two business days of receiving this request.  Not all requests are granted. If granted, we will notify you with fee amount. Depending on location, additional travel time may be added to the fee amount. Fees are due prior to inspection.

Schedule an Inspection

Process

Inspections can only be scheduled with the permit holder. Inspections will only be scheduled with an approved permit issued by the fire department.

Call (408) 378-4010 and ask for Fire Prevention.

Inspections are scheduled starting at 9:00 am and the last inspection time is at 3:00 pm. Early morning or late afternoon inspections must be requested via overtime.

Cancellations must be done within 24 hours of appointment.

Permit holders may not hold times or swap project reservations.

Special Events Application

If you have an event with the below conditions, you will need to fill out a special events application form.

  1. Large gathering of the public for a festival or street fair.
  2. Tent in excess of 400 square feet.
  3. Tent with no sides in excess of 700 square feet.
  4. Propane tank
  5. Open flame
  6. Haunted Houses
  7. Pumpkin Patch
  8. Tree Lots
  9. Graduation Nights
  10. Fireworks (see fireworks application)

Tents and Membrane Structures

Fill out a special event Information sheet and include the tent information on the application.

If your event includes a tent over 400 square feet or tent with no sides over 700 square feet, you will need to pay a tent fee.

  • Campbell - $85
  • Cupertino - $85
  • Los Altos – no fee
  • Los Altos Hills – no fee
  • Los Gatos - $100
  • Monte Sereno - $85
  • Saratoga - $85
