Discovery Days
Are you looking for a firefighter to come to your school's Discovery Day? The
Santa Clara County Fire Department can provide your school with a speaker to talk about
firefighting as a career and fire safety. If you are interested in scheduling a speaker,
please call the Public Education Office.
FF/E (now Captain) Debbie Stocksick, representing the fire department, answers questions for 6th graders
at a Morgan Hill elementary school career day. The students move among the 20 or so booths,
asking questions about different career choices. 14 February 2003.
As the students take notes, Stocksick speaks to them and hands out information
and advice about firefighting as a career choice.
After visiting all of the booths, the 80 or so students get a presentation on
fire safety. Here, a student assists in demonstrating how to test a smoke alarm.
The students also learn about such topics as fire behavior, what to do in an
emergency, proper use of 911, and how to deal with some problems around the home
such as a stove fire or what to do for a burn.
Another student dons turnouts as Stocksick answers questions about fire safety
and firefighting in general. The students also learn how firefighters will respond
in a variety of emergency situations.

FF/E Jeff Brown gives several dynamic fire safety and equipment presentations at
