INTRODUCTION
The subjects listed on this checklist will form the basis of the material used for your probationary
period. It is your responsibility to have the listed items signed and dated by an Officer, or Paramedic
(for Paramedic issues) as you demonstrate competency in these subjects. The Officer, or Paramedic will
sign this checklist only when you, the probationary firefighter, have demonstrated the required skill or
knowledge.
The checklist is divided into modules of training: Module #1 shall be completed first, and the others shall follow consecutively. There will be three month's time to complete each module. Firefighters shall coordinate with District Chiefs for the appropriate corresponding training.
Testing: A written quiz and manipulative performance exam will be administered upon completion of each module. The quiz and skills check will cover material contained in that module. Module exams will be administered every three months with a final written and manipulative at the completion of the probationary period. Exam dates will be announced by the Training Division.
All standards are referenced to the latest edition of the Training Manual and IFSTA manuals. The responsibility shall be that of the probationary employee to show documentation for references when asked by the company officer.
Your probationary period is a very important part of your fire department career; it is at this time you must learn the basic factors of firefighting and what it takes to make a fire department. This will require much effort and study, and sincere application to duty. To complete this checklist satisfactorily it will undoubtedly mean much of your time involved in study. Show the initiative to do better than average in your examinations.
Any time you are in doubt about anything, do not hesitate to ask questions of your company officer. Your company officer will be your guide; listen and follow advice. Good luck for a successful fire service career!
