Water Rescue, 13 Jan 1980
A notable rescue took place on 13 January 1980, when a mother and her six and nine-year-old sons tried to drive across the rain-swollen creek that flowed over Stevens Canyon Road. The depth and speed of the water soon overturned the car and it was swept downstream, coming to rest upside down on its roof with the occupants still inside. Engine 7 crew (Captain Dick Baughman, FF/E Jim Condy and FF/E Brad McMullin) and Truck 1 crew (Captain Mike Harrigan, FF/E Clark Mauel and FF/E Mike Heney) arrived and immediately set up for the difficult rescue. With Truck 1 in a very precarious position next to the creek, the aerial ladder was extended and the lightest rescuer, Captain Dick Baughman, went out to rescue the people in the car. He lowered an attic ladder to the car, climbed down, opened the trunk lid, pulled the back seat out, and escorted the occupants to safety. The mother and her children escaped the ordeal uninjured!
