Firefighters Union - IAFF Local 1165

The Santa Clara County Fire Department has evolved from a District-run mostly of farmers/ranchers to a strong organization with more than 250 employees. Much of this growth occurred through fire consolidations. In 1947, the Cottage Grove and Oakmead Farms Fire District consolidated to form the Santa Clara County Fire Protection District. In 1970, Los Gatos, Burbank and Alma Fire Districts were added to the list. For the next 20 years, the cities of Campbell, Morgan Hill, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills became a part of the Santa Clara County Fire Department.

Employee wages and working conditions evolved significantly during this period of growth. Unfortunately due to low staffing and a grueling workload, firefighters lives were put at risks. The Board of Fire Commissioners was not willing to reduce hours, hire addition firefighters, or even properly supply the stations. Because of this inattention to the needs of the firefighters, the IAFF Local 1165 Firefighter Union was born.

Today, the IAFF Local 1165 Firefighter Union is ranked as one of the top unions for its services it provides for its community.  In addition to the dedication they display to the community members, the Local also dedicates a tremendous amount of time and effort to the community by hosting many annual BBQs and fundraising events for the community. In order to be on top of the issues facing the safety and well being of the firefighters, Local 1165 is an active participant in the political process. Executive board members make annual trips to Washington D.C. and Sacramento to lobby the congressional and legislative representatives to make sure the voices of the community are heard.

The Union Hall building was originally the central Headquarters for the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District, until it was moved to its present location in 1991.
