The County Fire Marshal's Office provides fire/life safety plan review and field inspection of all unincorporated county construction projects. Projects range from single family residences to significant construction at Stanford University.
The Fire Marshal's Office reviews development plans to ensure projects meet the minimum code requirements for adequate fire apparatus access and water supplies. Building plans are reviewed to ensure projects meet the minimum fire and building codes for fire/life safety requirements for fire rated construction, occupant egress systems, fire sprinkler systems, and fire alarm systems.
In 1987, the County of Santa Clara contracted with the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District (County Fire) to provide Fire Marshal services for the County of Santa Clara. With this signed contract, State Fire Marshal James F. McMullen appeared at a Board of Supervisors meeting to officially appoint Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District's Fire Chief, Douglas Sporleder, the Fire Marshal for Santa Clara County. Ever since, the Fire Chief of Santa Clara County Fire Department has been the Santa Clara County Fire Marshal.
